LGBTTTI Coalition celebrates closing of another OAS general assembly

Medellín, Colombia
July 2019

The Coalition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Transsexual, Transgender, Transvestite and Intersex (LGBTTTI) of
Latin America and the Caribbean working within the framework of the Organization of American States
(OAS) was present at the 49th regular session of the General Assembly, which took place on
in Medellin, Colombia, on 27-28 June 2019. As in previous years, we also participate
at the Pre-General Assembly Dialogue with heads of delegation and the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
the OAS, among other actors, through two coalitions, one of LGBTI people and the other - formed
for the first time this year - of sex workers.

As a Coalition, we welcome the important advances in human rights, guidance
sexuality, gender identity, gender expression and sexual characteristics that took the form of
this General Assembly, including the adoption for the eleventh time of the resolution on
human rights of LGBTI people - with more inclusive language than in previous years -, the
re-election of Commissioners Arosemena and Macaulay and the election of Julissa Mantilla, in spite of the
attempts by anti-rights groups to delegitimise their candidacies. We also reject the
attempt to close the space for civil society, led by the Colombian government in the context of the
of the OAS General Assembly and we call on the OAS to avoid such situations to
future.
