In memory of Aldinebin Ramos

In memory of Aldinebin Ramos

Last Saturday, Asociación Chaparral Diversa and Colombia Diversa organised a vigil with more than 40 people at the Parque de los Presidentes in Chaparral to honour the life of Aldinebin, who was murdered last February 6th in her home by armed men.

For Colombia Diversa, "what is lost when an LGBT human rights defender is murdered is not simply, as if that were not enough, a human life; what is lost is the possibility, even the imagination, of existing in peace and happiness for LGBTIQ+ people in their community. What is lost cannot even be replaced, what we need now is a social conversation about how LGBT people participate in Colombian society and an understanding that LGBTIQ+ human rights advocacy is a call for the happiness of LGBTIQ+ people".

Aldinebin defended human rights in Tolima and was a member of the municipal roundtable of victims of the armed conflict in Chaparral. She also worked hard to strengthen Chaparral Diversa, the community organisation that defends the life and memory of LGBT people. Her murder comes on top of the case of Danna, a transgender leader from Chaparral, whose case we have been legally accompanying for years and for which the Colombian justice system has only presented delays.

For the Chaparral Diversa Association it is a priority to demand respect for the LGBTIQ+ population, "we continue to work in community and social spaces bringing inclusion to this population that has historically been marginalised".

Finally, Colombia Diversa calls on the authorities to continue with the investigation in accordance with national and international standards, taking into account discrimination as one of the reasons why the murders occurred.
